If they had known that the bill was going to be defeated by the Republicans, then they would have had the option to have one of their folks vote "No". In the next session, the person that voted No would have the option of calling for the bill to be brought up for a re-vote. At this point, only Republicans voted no, so it would be up to one of them to bring the HB177 up for another vote. Well, it was very important that the Dems didn’t know what was going on. The pro-labor GOPers (all but Thornburg) went to dissent the party line yet again. That makes these numbers fascinating. The DEMs were blindsided by the GOPer block dissent, supposedly not one GOPer breathed a word of their revolt. If Oberle, Lofink and Spence had voted against the bill, the GOPers would have simply stopped it with 22. Instead they took just enough votes off to enable a DEM voting block to tie the vote 19-19. With Kowalko and Williams' dissent, the vote did not carry the bill (19-17) and the Republicans still could avoid taking on the full wrath of labor. Actually, I saw Sam Lathem last night on Channel 28 and he was saying that he originally did not favor 177 as he was for the Working Families Party but that HB 177 was sucking up all of everyone's attention. He said that it was consuming all of the other initiatives and it just was not that important to him. He wasn't able to get the really important bills worked on until he caved to Daniello. Hesaid he switched to support John and to make room to work on what was more important to labor's interests - like the collective bargaining no doubt. Lathem also laughed and said that now everyone was trying to claim credit. He said that a bunch of bloggers were running around taking credit for killing the bill. The bloggers are getting noticed even if Celia wants to ignore us!!!! well THAT is interesting!!!
